Man, I haven't played Tetrisphere in years ... we only rented it, Tetris-enthusiast as my mom is(it was probably the fact that it was 3D ... she just likes straight-up Tetris/Dr.Mario/Bejeweled, no music, etc).

Bubble Bobble is coming to VC this Monday .. maybe Tetrisphere will pop up sometime after?   It seems like I remember Youtube didn't have too many videos, but I'm definately going to have to refresh my memory a little..

On a related note, when my fiancée came over yesterday (she's still here now, I'm just taking some time to poke around on the computer for a bit. We'll be going back to her house later today through New Year's), and we were looking for something to play, and she picked out Tetrisphere. It's a game we've played a whole bunch over the time we've been together, so, nothing surprising about her picking it out, just figured I'd mention it here since it connected with what we were discussing here.

We played around with some of the different selection options for the Vs. mode, using a different piece assortment, layer levels, and core amounts from what we usually do. Just changing around stuff like that can really give the game a different feel.
It's still, as it's always been, a great game, needless to say.

Well, one of these definitely isn't a Legacy game, and the other three I still have trouble seeing that way (although I suppose it is now), but, figured I'd share them in here as well.

Thanks to Gamestop's Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale they've had going on the past week or so, I got Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos Origins for GCN, and Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime for DS. Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos Originals are two games I'd been meaning to get for a while, and was happy to finally get. Rocket Slime was more just a random purchase since they didn't have anything else that I was overly interested in, but I could get a free game (at like $18 or less, since that's what the cheapest of the two other games I was getting were), so, figured I'd check it out.
I haven't had much interest in those stores since they took over Funcoland (and Electronics Boutique as well, but, primarily Funcoland) and had them stop carrying used NES/SNES/N64 games. Still, of course, they do still have GCN games, so, this was good for that at least.

Then, these I'd bought last week on eBay, but came in today. Got two Dreamcast controllers, since I'd only had one before and it broke last week (the piece that goes into the system had snapped. Accidentally tripped over it. Ah well).
More interestingly (since controllers aren't too interesting), I also got Zelda: Twilight Princess for GCN. I've had the Wii version for a while, but, was interested to try out the GCN version. So, it should be fun.

So, between those things and Christmas, I have a whole bunch of new games now that I need to play. So, aside from using the $25 gift certificate to the shop where I get older games at some point or another, I should take a break on getting games for a while

So, today I spent that $25 gift certificate (plus an extra $4), and got:

Cabal (NES)
Double Dragon 2 (NES)
Tengen Pacman (NES)
Animaniacs (SNES)
Mario's Time Machine (SNES)
Warlock (SNES)
Ys 3: Wanderers from Ys (SNES)
Sword of Vermillion (GEN)

So, 8 games for around $29. I'm pretty happy.
Now, I really should stop buying games for a little bit and spend some time playing all of this.

*nods* Yah, get to playing them... :p

Out of all those...... I can say that I've never naturally played any of them, and out of the one's I've technically played...well, I dunno if I even played the SNES Animaniacs much(I own the Genesis version which is completely different, but my brother has both our Genesis and SNES ).

I just recently gave up on both NiGHTS and BWii, took'em back to Gamestop, and preordered Endless Ocean.  But I had some extra money so I got 'Ontamarama', an Atlus-published rhythm game for DS.  I had heard some good things and some bad things about it, but I went ahead and got it.  Totally disappointed with it.  Sure, mechanically the game works well, but it's WAY over-complicated, and the user-feedback is non-existant.

Basically you're supposed to tap these 'creatures', or draw circles around them, filling in note-circles that are running against the top of the bottom screen.  There's a song playing in the background, and you're to push the corresponding direction(or button if you're left handed) as is on the note in order to play it.  So you're doing two things at once: tapping/circling small sprites, then pressing the corresponding button once it reaches the left most side of the screen where a target-circle is.

First problem: the music is lame.  There are a few decent songs, but nothing that really grabs you....that pretty much kills any rhythm game right there.  There just really isn't anything worth replaying because it was just so gosh-darn-great that you'd actually want to relive it.

Second: too complicated.  It might sound interesting to be juggling and balancing two tasks at once, but it's not fun.  Either it's too easy and you're having to wait after a tap before you can make the direction/button press, or things are too complicated and you just simply can't keep your eyes on two areas of the screen at the same time.

Third: little to no user feed-back.  Sure, not everyone has a DS rumble pack, but even a SOUND EFFECT would have sufficed when you pressed the right direction when successfully hitting a note, or even a sound effect when you tap a creature to fill a note.  You get NOTHING.  You get some annoying SFX and really annoying voice-synth-effects during cutscenes for a very very very contrived and heavily-cliche story line.  But when you're playing the actual game, all you get is the lame music, and it really doesn't change if you're hitting a note or missing a note.

It's like you're just listening to a song in the background, and then trying to press buttons to match it.  Or like you took a Guitar Hero guitar, watched MTV, and pretended you were playing the song you were listening to.   You might be doing a good job, but what's the point?  Sure, Ontamarama gives you a score for different things, but who cares?

It's just a frustration really.  I tried to get into it more... I thought maybe the problem was that I started playing on Easy, but no, Medium is just as bad, and when it gets more and more complex, it gets less and less fun.  It's a very interesting idea, but one that says they're 'overcomplicating a DS game just so you can make a unique game'.  That, and the lack of attaching some kind of change to hitting or missing a note is completely disappointing.

I hate it when I take games back when I bought them so recently, especially when income is next to nil right now, but this is definately going in to help complete payment on Endless Ocean because this is just...absurd.  It's funny how so much effort can go into making a game that works, does what it's supposed to well enough, but in every way it's just barely bad enough that it's just an annoyance, and not fun at all.

(Sorry to rant, but ugh, I'm tired of taking a chance on 'interesting' games and just managing to get the worst of the bunch..)

That's no fun. I'm generally a pretty good judge of the sort of games that I'd find interesting, and so don't end up with too many games that I really "regret" purchasing, and haven't ever returned a game. Certainly, there are games that I don't play nearly as much as others, but, I'm pretty happy having the majority of the games that I have. On the other hand, there are probably some games that I may like if I tried them which I pass over since I figure it's something that I wouldn't like, which is the downside to not taking chances on games. Nonetheless though.

In any event, despite me saying in the previous post that I should take a break and not buy any games for a while... Well, I bought some more games. I have an excuse though (really I do). I found out about another place near me (although not nearly as close or convenient as the place that I'd been buying all this previous stuff from) that carries older games, and I wanted to check it out (and, of course, checking it out means buying stuff). It has a much bigger selection of stuff (the walls were literally covered with games), but, the prices aren't nearly as good. Still, I found a few things. So, I got:

Archon (NES)
Astyanax (NES)
Double Dragon 2 (NES)
Solar Jetman (NES)
For around $11

Archon had been a game I'd been wanting to check out for a while. Hadn't ever played it, but, it looked like something I'd enjoy.
Double Dragon 2 I'd played a bunch over the years, but for whatever reason hadn't gotten around to buying. I'd been wanting to fill in that gap between Double Dragon 1 and 3 in my collection, and finally got around to doing that.
Solar Jetman I'd played a couple of times years back, but not for ages, so thought it would be interesting to get.
Astyanax I hadn't ever played, but, again, just looked like a game that I would enjoy.

So, now I have to fight the urge to go back there and look around some more for a while. Plus, I have a $5 off an order of $25 or more at the main store that I've been buying at which expires at the end of January that I'd really like to use, but really shouldn't. So, maybe this really will be it for a bit.

I don't think I played DD2 or DD3 very much at all, but I loved the first game because it was 'one of my cousin's games'....basically almost any game he had that we played after our 12-hour drive to that area was an awesome/weird game, and that was one of them. DD2 felt a little different though...I dunno.  That's cool that you completed the collection tho, it always nags me even if I miss the one game that wasn't very good(although it's not always a guarantee I'll buy it).

The others I haven't really heard of, so I hope they're pretty good...:p  I wish we had more stores-that-sell-classic-games around here...I can only think of a bookstore/pawnshop and another pawnshop that sell some old games, but they mostly have the tired-old games nobody really wanted, or it's just for the fact of pawnshops being kind of 'seedy' places and I don't want to be in them.  Plus they're kind of far out of the way and the trip probably isn't worth it if they don't have what I want.....ah well. I could always eBay them I guess... >_>;

Wish my LCD TV could play zapper games...right before I got it, I had just gotten 'To the Earth', and I really wanted to get into playing that one again, but now I can't.

I know exactly what you mean about your cousin's games. My father's mother lived about two hours away, and my aunt and uncle and cousins lived two houses down from her, and my cousin had an NES. Any time we'd go to visit her, I always seemed to find my way over to my cousin's house, and would be playing his NES. I have very fond memories of many of the games I would play there, and later ended up buying many of them for myself as well. In fact, To The Earth, which you mentioned, was one of those games. The Goonies II, Wizards and Warriors, and a number of other games, that's how I first got to play them, and I enjoy them very much both because they're fun games, and, as you said for you as well, because I used to play them there.

I'm not too crazy about the Double Dragon games in general, it's not like something that had been nagging at me, but, it was nice to fill in that gap. Of them, Double Dragon 1 is my favorite as well, and, now that I get to play it again, Double Dragon 2 is high up there as well. Double Dragon 3 is an alright game, but, for whatever reason, it just feels really different from the first two.

Yeah, for the longest time (pretty much since NES and SNES games were still the "new" games and being sold regularly) I haven't had a place near me (at least not that I knew about) to buy older games like this, and have had to rely on eBay and such. To now know about two places near me which carry older games, and with really good selections and good and decent prices, well... I'm pretty happy, to say the least. Too bad I don't have more money to spare (or, it probably is just as well, otherwise I'd really go overboard).

I haven't been purchasing as much games as I'd like to lately, since I'm finally catching up with most of my Wii games that I haven't beaten yet, and because No More Heroes is coming up right around the corner.  Alas, in the past two weeks I did pick up one game - Metroid II: Return of Samus for the GB ($5).  This game ultimately completes my collection of Metroid games, minus MP Hunters and MP Pinball.

The game has been thrown into that pile of games that I promise I'll come back to once I get the time (Terris, I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about here :p).  I finally got in the mood to go back to the majority of my unfinished Wii games to complete them (Super Paper Mario, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3).  In every one of them I'm just about at the final chapter/temple/area, so they won't last me very long.

Eh... I've got Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, Metroid II, and Chrono Trigger all patiently waiting for me.  I put down CT not too long after getting to a close end of the game, but as for the rest, I'm either directly at the start, or only minutes away from it.

I know I keep saying this, but I *REALLY* wish they'd remake Metroid II(and in a good way that doesn't compromise some of the cooler parts).  You might not quite enjoy it as much seeing as how the superior SNES version has long-since released, and the fact that you can get lost easy MOSTLY due to the largely-similar environments.....but it's still a very good, solid game.

@Terrisus: Tehh, right before NSider closed I was slowwwly starting to create my own quote-unquote 'feature' on the VC board(which was probably more appropriate for the Legacy Systems board really), and it was based on all of the games that I had first(and mostly) played on my friends-and-or-family's gaming consoles.  I called 'Relative Gaming'... :p  Didn't get much anywhere, but I had a long list of all the games that I'd played and some impressions in mind I could quickly 'decompress' from memory and talk about...but eh, I got rid of the list a month or more back anyway...

Really haven't gotten too much in the way of Legacy items lately, been focusing on my 350 collection since there are so many good games out for that, but I did get a few games from my girlfriend few days ago. Just kind of a "Because I Can" present, which was really nice. I got:

Ice Climber (NES)
Zelda II (NES)
Mario Clash (VB)

All three are games I've really been wanting (especially Mario Clash) and she said she just found them at a garage sale last weekend. I didn't even know she payed attention to my hobby.

I know what you're talking about, SKB. I've got so many games that I'm nearly at the end of, but put down in favor of starting a game that I had just gotten at the time. I probably ought to take a weekend to myself soon and finish what I can.

SKB: I've been meaning to get Metroid 2 again for a while. I had it a while back, but unfortunately, as my Gameboy games have a habit of doing, it disappeared somewhere along the line. It was definitely a very fun game though, and, as I said, I should get it again one of these days.
Yes, of course, I definitely know what you're talking about regarding games that need to be played Evermore and Illusion of Gaia have been on my list of those for a while. I really should get to them one of these days.

Magnus: Yeah, video games are plenty of fun on their own, but, it's really enjoyable when one has memories connected to the games as well, such as having played them with a family member or a friend or such. It's great to have games which one has memories of like that.

BBB: Nifty, some very fun games there. Zelda 2, I know others often aren't as fond of it, but, while I enjoy the whole Zelda series very much, Zelda 2 is my 2nd-favorite in the series, and one of my favorite games overall. A very different, and challenging, game, but definitely very fun. Mario Clash is a great game as well (plus it's a Virtual Boy game, which that alone makes it nifty), it's interesting to get a "new" take on the original Mario Bros. Even if you didn't think she was paying attention, looks like your girlfriend made some good video game choices

I just bought Mario Tennis for the N64 a couple days ago. I'd played it originally when it came out but never actually bought it, so I've been wanting it for a long time. Of course, recently I haven't really had cash to spare or I had other things I wanted more. Finally went ahead and bought it. It should be in by the end of the week. I can't wait!

Nifty, that should be fun. It's been on my "to buy (again)" list for a while, but, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've gotten a number of new games since I last posted (since I haven't had a chance to drop in for a while), forget them all off the top of my head, and definitely don't remember how much I'd spent on them, but, I'll list what I can come across since I last posted.

Adventures of Dino Riki (NES)
Baseball Simulator (NES)
Day Dreamin' Davey (NES)
Lode Runner (NES)
Wild Gunman (NES)
Wizards and Warriors 3 (NES)
Lester the Unlikely (SNES)
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (SNES)
Qix (GB)

Those were all at my local video game places.
A couple of days ago I also bought Hillsfar (NES) on eBay, but, still waiting for that to come in.

I probably forgot a couple, but, close enough for now.

Adventures of Dino Riki....it's funny, a LOT of people put that up on their 'worst/hardest NES games ever' lists.....but I have some memories with that game.  Just from one or two rentals, really....but it was pretty cool.  One of the more original shooter games, especially since back then, I don't even think I even thought of it as a shooter.  It's got some kinda nifty music too.

Haven't heard of Baseball Simulator OR Day Dreamin' Davey.... like at all....need to hear some quick impressions on those...

Wild Gunman's kind of cool.  WW3 I haven't even heard of ... I knew there was WW1(which I kind of liked if only for the Stage 1 music), and barely WW2, but didn't know a third one came out.  Huh.

And I think I know of the others, but not to the point of wanting to look into them(sometimes because I only know TOO much about them :p ).

Sounds cool though.  I ought to dig out my GBC some day and mess around with the ones I've still got, but I have a hard time keeping up on the NEW games I have... >_>;
