In need of a fireman?

Somebody has to start this, so it might as well be me.

I have been excited about this game ever since I first heard about it. The release date (November 5) is now only 34 days aways, so much better when I started the countdown at 90 days.

Anyway, it is shaping up to possibly be be the best one in the series, and that is saying a lot. This is the 10th game in series, and it is nearly as old as the Final Fantasy series. (FE started in 1990, while FF began its run in 1987)

For those of you who may need a rundown:
RD is the 10th game in series, and the sequel to the 2005 title, Path of Radiance. This adventure takes place 3 years later, and it centers on a new character named Micaiah and a group that she is a part of called the Dawn Brigade. Sothe from PoR appears early on as Micaiah's protector, and the story picks up with Micaiah being chased by soldiers from the Begnion Empire. The cast of PoR returns in an epic adventure that spans over 4 parts, 4 different parties that will eventually join together, with the game clocking out at about 40 hours.

I will be happy to discuss RD in this thread, and I would like to begin my first topic:

Something that is bothering me about the English version is the opening cinematic's voice acting. I would first like to say that:

1. My anticipation for this game is so great that my expectations are probably too high.
2. I am a student of voice, and the way the soldiers are speaking in the English version is troubling to me.

http://media.wii.ign.com/media/826/826984/vids_1.html (English)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0TgC7qO900 (Japanese)

The soldiers are just bad, there is just no other way to say it. They sound fake and silly, and the situation that the characters are in is not a silly one at all. I will say it again: The soldiers are just bad. In the Japanese, the soldiers sound much more natural, but then again I don't know exactly what Japanese is supposed to sound like. I do know what English sounds like, however.

Micaiah is better than the soldiers, but not that great. She could have saved herself if just whispered her line instead of speaking in full voice (speaking like a machine doesn't help her either ). When you are hiding from soldiers, you don't speak in full voice, I'm sorry, but you just don't. Her Japanese counterpart gets that right, and that is the major difference between them. I like her voice, but not her acting. I can only hope that it is better in future cutscenes.

Sothe is good in both versions. He is the only one in the English version that sounds half-believable, but only gets 6 words. He doesn't sound forced, fake, or like a machine - he sounds natural. Sothe gets a

So, I'm very disappointed in the voice acting overall. I know that there are games that are much worse in terms of voice acting, but there is no excuse for those terrible soldiers. I know that they are dubbing, but that shouldn't mean anything. The voice work should sound natural, and not the mess that it is.

I've never played a game in the series.

Seeing those videos makes me want it. <.<

The voice acting for the solders wasn't just unnatural, it was *slow*.  I hate that more than their fakeness.

The girl's lines were spoken too loudly and slowly too.  I mean, if you're trying to portray a tense scene, don't make them all talk at a leisurely pace like they're walking a dog in a park in broad daylight.

I think she gasped too much for someone who was trying to hide.

It looks like a gorgeous game, though. The music was alright too.

I've not played any Fire Emblem games.. ever. In fact, up until I tried out Disgaea I'd not played that *style* of game before.

I would like to try out FE. Do you think I should play the GC FE first?

@ Hen- it would surely help, but i dont think its necessary.

im secretly hoping that they includea mode in the game in which the wii searches your GCN memory cards for completed files from the previous game and you can unlock bonuses that way. i hope so.
I will not be getting this game at launch since i am currently too busy with school and already have 2 games to pick up this month: Fifa 08 and RE:Umbrella Chronicles. Next month I'm getting Galaxy and on Dec Im getting Brawl. so i think i will be plenty busy with those games.
I might pick this one up through the holidays, 2 week vacation; what!?
I was thinking of taking a road trip though >_>
tryng to get away from snow, anybody know any good destinations?

@Feu:
You are right about the "slow" comment as well. The soldiers are awful, and it is really ashame. Micaiah's loud speaking about how she wants that bird to be quiet makes zero sense. "I'm gonna hide by being as loud as possible."

I still think Sothe sounds good. Too bad he only gets 6 words in that particular cutscene.

I really like the music of the game. That cinematic music isn't the best one, but there are several songs that I really like. The opening CG has a great song!

@Hen:
The GameCube version has been considered the easiest of the 3 American versions, but if you have spent time with Disgaea, you should pick up on the ideas pretty easily. The characters and story aren't as silly and the gameplay isn't quite as in-depth as Disgaea, but I personally like it that way. I think Disgaea forces you to power level, and with the level up system like it is, I just didn't get into the game. I played Disgaea for 18 hours and I didn't hardly get anywhere. At least with FE you go story point to story point, and it is very clear when the game is over. FE: The Sacred Stones lets you wander on the world map to fight random enemies, but you don't even have to do that to beat the game. Also, SS has a "training tower" so it is very easy to power up your units.

@Mercurian:
Actually, characters do get bonuses if you played through PoR on the GNC.

To transfer data, you need a Gamecube memory card with FE9 clear (Epilogue) data. When you start a new FE10 file, the game should prompt you to choose a cleared FE9 data file.

Base stats

If a character reached the stat cap for their final class and at their final level (20), in FE9, they will receive a fixed bonus to that stat in FE10.
The bonus is +5 for HP and +2 for Strength, Magic, Skill, Speed, Luck, Defence and Resistance.
Navded receives the bonus for any stat that Devdan capped at his final level (20).
Calill receives an additional bonus, on top of her own, for any stat that Largo capped at his final level (20).
For example: If Ilyana had maxed Skill and Resistance as a Level 20 Sage in FE9, she will gain +2 Skill and +2 Resistance to her FE10 bases.

An exception is Sothe:

If Sothe reached Level 20 in FE9, his FE9 stats will be transferred directly to FE10
If a FE9 stat is lower than a default FE10 stat, the FE9 stat will take precedence.
Since the Resistance cap is lower in FE10, if his Resistance was 16 to 20 in FE9 it will become 15 in FE10.

Weapon ranks
If a weapon type, in FE9, reaches a rank from C to S, there will be a Weapon EXP bonus to that weapon type in FE10.

The bonus is 40 for C, 80 for B, 120 for A and 160 for S.

If the final weapon rank in FE9 exceeds the FE10 weapon rank cap, it will be set to the FE10 weapon rank cap.

Supports
Support conversations, unlocked in FE9, can be viewed in a support library once FE10 has been cleared at least once. It seems only support conversations unlocked in a transferred file can be viewed, and only after that file has been cleared (in FE10).

A-level Supports obtained in FE9 become bond supports (with a bonus of +5 Critical and Dodge).

Certain A-level Supports in FE9 may have effects on the story.

Coins
Any Coins collected in FE9 will appear in Ike's convoy at the beginning of Part 3.

Coins aren't for collecting, so don't fret if you sold them the first time. Instead they are used to give random bonuses to forged weapons

from: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/elaice/fe10/transfer.html (This page has a few spoilers, and the entire website this came from is full of spoilers. Just so you know. )

The only two games I care about at the moment are FE and SSBB. I'll worry about other games later.

As for a location for a road trip:
Florida
California
Arizona (like Hen said )

There probably won't be any snow in either of those states. (Well, maybe northern Califorina. I don't know.)

With RD still 23 days away, there hasn't been much in the way of news.

IGN added some new pictures today, which can be found here:
http://media.wii.ign.com/media/826/826984/imgs_1.html

I really like some of the offical character art but my top 3 (for now ) are: Haar (eyepatch with the axe), Titiana (long red hair with an axe), and the Black Knight (guy in black armor ).

I have been fond of the FE7, 9, and 10 art styles, and I would try to draw a few of the characters, but I don't have any skill. My stick figures don't even look very good.  Oh well.

My anticipation grows for this game with each passing day. I hope I can finish all of my real work before it comes out.

Finally, something worth posting in this thread.

An interview with Rich Amtower (Assistant Manger of Localization/NOA) is on Gametrailers.

Here: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27052.html?type=wmv

Impossibly, but apparently possible, I am now even more hyped!  Only 6 more days till next Monday!

As we approach 2 full days till RD's release date, IGN (namely Bozon) released the IGN review.

Found here: http://wii.ign.com/articles/832/832368p1.html

These are my thoughts on his review:

I want to object to a few of his comments, but I haven't played the game yet, so I really can't.

But I want to anyway!

"What you won't get with Fire Emblem, however, is any motion control or IR experience. There's no Mii integration, no online, no waggle, and no IR aiming. It is what it is, and Fire Emblem plays identical to its GameCube counterpart, who in turn still drew inspiration from the very beginning nearly two decades ago. The downside to that? Fire Emblem inherently feels like a GameCube title, with nearly identical interface, style, graphics, audio (or lack of), pacing, and general appearance, so while the game may come in a white box and burned onto a DVD, it's about as far from a traditional Wii experience as you can get. In fact, chances are if you already know you want this game before reading our review, as Fire Emblem hits a very specific, mature, traditional crowd."

1. Motion control would be ridiculous.
2. IR (what does this stand for anyway?) aiming would be more awkward than anything else. Could you imagine having to point the Wii-mote at the screen for every movement and menu action? A control pad and a button works much better. Point-and-click would work a lot better on the DS than it would on the Wii - for a FE game anyway.
3. Mii integration? What? That doesn't even make sense for a FE game.
4. No online. There could be some online elements, I will give him that point. We could have trial maps (custom maps maybe?) and we could battle our endgame teams online. I wouldn't mind doing something like that.
5. "It is what it is." Way to borrow from the athlete handbook.
6. Gamecube Presentation. This does have some merit. The problem is that the game was a Gamecube title that was ported over after some of the work had already been done. They could have overhauled the graphics, but that would have delayed the game for at least another 6 months if not a year (in my guess-ti-mation  ). It was meant to be a PoR sequel, so the GCN presentation doesn't bother me much. It would have been nice if the graphics (especially the map sprites) were more in line with the FMV sequences, and I hope that FE11 takes a step forward in that regard.

"... there are a few things Fire Emblem is definitely missing, and they can be very, very annoying. For starters 99% of the storytelling in the game is done with static drawings placed over a painted background. When characters interact, text scrolls by with no VO to be had. There are sections in the game - many more this time around than on GameCube - that launch FMV sequences which of course support full voice acting, and the actors this time around do a wonderful job; it's just a shame they couldn't be used for the entirety of the story."

1. "Static drawings." I actually have to agree with this criticism. FE could take a cue from Disgaea or Atelier Iris in terms of "portrait storytelling." Those portraits have emotion, and are interesting to watch.
2. Voice work. You know my stance on the opening cutscene, and I'm hoping that the rest of it is as good as he says it is. I wouldn't mind voice work, but I don't mind the way it is done in RD. Again, it could take a cue from Disgaea.

"...the experience is anything but Wii-like..."
What defines a Wii-like experience? This is one of the more irritating statements in the review, even when taken in its complete context. If he defines Wii-like as waggle, point-and-click, etc., then I guess SSBB won't be a Wii experience.

Those are my comments about his review. Overall, I thought he reviewed the game pretty fairly. He did focus on a lot of negatives and didn't mention any of the positive changes from PoR. He could have balanced it better than harping on the "this is a Gamecube game" line.

Four posts in a row by me? Get interested people!

I just wanted to say that Radiant Dawn's release date is now only hours away!  I'm spending the rest of today finishing up my school work for tomorrow and Tuesday, and cleaning up the room where the Wii is. That room is a total wreck, and I think that I'm going to move the Wii down the hall into my room. I have a feeling that I will be playing early and often very soon, and he may not want me in his room ALL the time.

I will be sure to post my impressions, if I can bring myself to tear away from the game!

I've been gone for too long. Look at all the new smileys!

Anyway, I finished Radiant Dawn for the first time yesterday, and I can't wait to play it again. The story is a little "under-written" in the beginning, but it shapes up into a the kind of story that makes you think. Made me think anyway.

Despite what several reviews say, the graphics have been improved quite a bit from its GCN predecessor, especially the cutscenes and battle scenes. The maps show some improvement, but look more like the GCN game that anything else.

I was planning on using my Wavebird to play the game, but I found that the Wii-mote on its side is a comfortable thing. I was actually surprised!

The game is noticeably harder than PoR, even on Easy. I haven't tried the harder modes yet, but they must be very tough, because easy wasn't cakewalk for me, and I have played the other 3 FE games several times, and this was tough. This game may even alienate newcomers, but it is definitely a satisfying experience to get through. If you haven't played any FE games, I would recommend playing Path of Radiance first, as it is the easiest game. (IMO) FE and Sacred Stones are also both great games, but both are harder than PoR. Plus, you can get some transfer data which was described earlier in the thread. It doesn't work if you have any easy files on your GCN card, so beware that. Having one causes the game to freeze.

I hope you all give this game a try. It is tough, the story shapes out, and it is a lot of fun to play. I looking forward to my second playthrough, which has extras that the first playthrough doesn't have!

I love the look of the Fire Emblem games, I just can't get into them.  I bought Path of Radiance and maybe got one third of the way through and lost interest.  Love the characters, love the story, find the gameplay just a bit tedious.  *shrugs*  Maybe I can get back into it and then try out this game, it looks very nice.

I can't wait until Christmas; hopefully I'll receive this awesome game as a present.

I have a question though. Does Sothe's stats all actually get transferred to FE10 if he reaches level 20 in FE9? I hear this everywhere, but a friend who bought it said that his/her Sothe DIDN'T get his stats all transferred, and it was at level 20. He/She said he had his crappy base stats.

This ticks me off; did all the work on my Sothe raising him to Lv.20, with most stats capped, go to waste? :\
