There appears to be an ongoing issue with the shoutbox freezing up when using Firefox. I'm not too sure why this is happened, so bear with me on this while I get my head round what's going on and try to fix it

Cass just told me that sometimes the shoutbox freezes up in Firefox (won't refresh). Does or has anyone else noticed this?

yah. granted IE has it's quirks too, but IE seems more flexible than firefox, and IE likes to whine when something goes horribly wrong (or not, as the case may be). but firefox doesn't, and just stops working. (hence why i've never noticed this problem before, this is not exhibited on IE)

and what's worse, is now i HAVE to use firefox to try and find out why the shoutbox is doing what it's doing, and to stop it doing that!

sometimes i hate being clever lol

While I do love Firefox, I totally can relate to what you're saying, dan. When something works on IE and it breaks on FF, it can be really tricky to find. It's for the same reason you said...FF doesn't give an error, it just...doesn't work.

I'm not sure if this will help or not (or perhaps you're already using it), but I use this at work and it's such a nifty tool! It's called Firebug, and it's a Firefox Add-on that lets you edit and debug HTML/scripts/CSS on the fly while visiting a webpage. It really is useful for finding the root cause of those FF-only issues. Anyways, linky to Firebug. I'm not sure if it'll be extremely useful for the shoutbox, but perhaps it's worth a shot and I'm sure it'll be handy eventually some day anyway.

yah. i use firebug at home and at work. problem is, i've seen the shoutbox problem happen on firefox at home. no js errors. the get request to the server just freezes, but doesn't time out. i'm baffled because i use the same ajax code on my stuff at work without any issues lol
though i have also tried the edit on-the-fly of code, and i can't seem to work out how to make it listen to me lol

then close it. on the right hand side of the blue bar with "shoutbox" in it, press the "-" button, which will shrink it (and it should remember that you did that too), so the shoutbox is hidden.

i'm testing a preliminary fix for this. if you're going to use this page, please let me know/reply here so i know how many people are using it. only people who have seen the fault happen, or are suffering because the fault happens for them too much use this. as it's a test page it'll work intermittently until i find the fault, so if you aren't suffering, please use the front page's shoutbox.

thank you.
